MARIONNETTES AN ZERO – an exhibition of Czech puppetry at the World Festival of Puppet Theatre in France
On Friday, 16 September, a gala opening was held at the town hall in France’s ‘puppetry metropolis’ Charleville-Mézières for the exhibition Marionnettes An Zero (Puppets since Year Zero), which was organised by the Arts and Theatre Institute as part of the biennial World Festival of Puppet Theatre (16. 9. - 25. 9. 2011). The festival, which this year is celebrating its 50th jubilee, on this occasion welcomed 132 theatre groups from 28 countries in its main programme, 120 groups in the accompanying programme taking place on the streets, and 14 exhibitions drawing attention to the history of puppet theatre in the host region of the Ardennes and in other centres of puppet art, one of which is without a doubt the Czech Republic.
The morning opening event for the Czech exhibition was a prologue to the festival, which had its grand opening at a gala programme mapping the fifty years of the festival’s existence and held at night on Ducal square. The Czech exhibition at the town hall welcomed a representative of the town council of Charleville-Mézières Phillipe Paillat, the festival’s director Anne-Françoise Cabanis, and the festival’s president Jean-Luc Felix.
The Czech exhibition, which focused on the work of puppet theatre since 1989, had more than 150 puppets from the contemporary work of professional puppet theatres and independent groups. This picture of contemporary Czech puppetry was rounded out by an exhibition of 40 photographs on show in the foyer and prepared for the exhibition by Kateřina Lešková-Dolenská. The entire exhibition was met with a strong reception and enjoyed large attendance. Alongside the public areas of the town hall Czech puppets also flooded the windows of shops and cafes throughout Charleville-Mézières, imaginatively installed there a week before the exhibition’s official opening.
The exhibition was not the only event showcasing contemporary Czech puppetry – as part of the programme Alfa Theatre staged its production of James Blond, Vít Marčík Theatre put on its version of Snow White, and Liberec’s Naive Theatre performed Swan Lake. The Forman Brothers Theatre gained enormous attention with its Obludarium, and the company’s tent was set up close to the site of the exhibition and bravely took in the rush of domestic and foreign festival spectators.
The programme bulletin presented an overview of companies that had performed at the festival of the course of its fifty-year existence, and alongside France, neighbouring Belgium and Germany, the Czech Republic was the country with the largest number of representatives. This year the Czech Republic’s presence at the festival was the largest since 1972, when Czech puppet theatre made its first appearance at the festival. As well as the festival’s jubilee, this year marked the thirtieth anniversary of the International Puppetry Institute in Charleville-Mézières, an institute that prominent Czech puppeteers were also instrumental in founding – in particular Jan V. Dvořák and Josef Krofta, and later as heads of the ‘master class’ Ctibor Turba, Josef Svoboda and Jan Švankmajer.
The exhibition Marionnettes An Zero was prepared by the Department of International Cooperation and External Relations at the Arts and Theatre Institute. The curator was Nina Malíková and Antonín Maloň was responsible for preparing all the technical aspects of the exhibition. Exhibit pieces were borrowed from the archives of Czech theatres (Minor Theatre / Prague, Lampion Theatre / Kladno, Naive Theatre Liberec, Alfa Theatre / Pilsen, Radost Theatre / Brno and DRAK Theatre / Hradec Králové) and from the private collection of Renata Pavlíčková.
